On the same day as the Radio 5 Live interview, we operated on Tim. The vasectomy had been 27 years previously when Tim was in the US Navy (I am told the ship was docked at the time!). He had been Fiona's partner for 5 years and they had been trying to conceive for 5 years. They were advised, as couples often are, to try IVF. They had undergone 3 cycles of IVF, all without success although on the positive side Fiona had been able to produce lots of eggs so her 'ovarian reserve' was good . Tim and Fiona had spent over £15,000 on IVF, and yet their reversal had cost less a fifth of that sum.
But reversal couldn't possibly work, could it? Well, after we had cleared away the scar tissue surounding the vasectomy site, we opened the vas, did the microscopy tests and BINGO, live sperms!!! We were left with a narrow but healthy tube to repair. It took a painstaking 3 and a half hours of microsurgery to make the connections, we missed the invitation to appear on the BBC, but were able to give this lovely couple the chance to have a baby of their own. Definitely a good day in the office!
Tim is making a good recovery. We will post the results of the 2 and 4 month tests as we receive them.
